Salzbrunn started his junior hockey as a member of the short-lived Plattsburgh Pioneers. As a member of the Pioneers, Salzbrunn led the team with thirteen assists in seventeen games.[1] The Pioneers folded after seventeen games, and Salzbrunn finished his season with the Quebec Remparts.
Salzbrunn started his professional career as a member of the New York Slapshots of the ACHL in 1985-86, where he would be reunited with former Pioneers linemate Scott Rettew. Salzbrunn finished his rookie season with eleven goals in thirty-two games, which was ninth highest total on the Slapshots.
Salzbrunn joined the Johnstown Chiefs for the 1988-89 ECHL season. His 32 goals, a career high, also made him part of an ECHL team record. Along with teammates Joe Gurney, Rob Hrytsak, Tom Sasso, and Mike Marcinkiewicz, Salzbrunn's 1988-89 Chiefs' team is one of four teams in ECHL history to have five 30 goal scorers on its roster in one season.[2] After reaching the Riley Cup Finals with the Chiefs, Salzbrunn signed with the newly-formed Nashville Knights for the 1989-90 season.
Salzbrunn started the 1990-91 ECHL season with the Cincinnati Cyclones, scoring thirty-four points in thirty-eight games before being traded back to Johnstown.
Salzbrunn's son, also named Jeff, is currently playing junior hockey as a member of the Chicago Hitmen, a member of the North American 3 Hockey League.
